THE STORY OF NEEL BLAIR
Keyboards, Saxophone, Vocals
Some people say that "filler" is unimportant. That it is an option to be added later. They want you to think of "filler" as synonymous with the extra water in your canned tuna, that bit of extra air in your potato chip bag, or those annoying musical montages that appear near the middle of your favorite TV drama when the writers run out of ideas. But I am here to pose the bold question, America: Where would the world be without filler?
I am the mustard on your corned beef on rye, I am that frosting in the middle of the two layers of cake... you know, that FUNCTIONAL bit of frosting that's holding the cake together. I am the expandable, gap filling, self hardening insulation that comes in a can. I am the caulk in the plumbing installation that is HUXTER.
They will tell you that guitar, bass, drums, and a singer is all you need in a band. But I say "GIVE ME FILLER, OR GIVE ME A SHARP STICK IN THE EYE!"
Requisite patriotic reference: In post-9/11 America, filler is more important than ever. Along with buying more cars, bombing the shit out of Arab countries and bringing Coca-Cola and McDonalds to every corner of the planet. Go AMERICA!!!
Like so many of you, my Mom MADE me take piano lessons. My great rebellion against piano came in the form of the saxophone, an instrument that has followed me around for 17 years, despite my frequent desire to pawn it in order to support my raging doughnut and pastry addiction. Somehow, even when I was a full time jazz saxophonist, I escaped heroin. Alas, the sleazy world of deep fried lard-and-flour dough with sugar injected into it, drizzled on top it, or sprinkled lovingly on its smooth surface sucked me in and has not released its grasp since. Speaking of... Hey Krispy Kreme! We're looking for a SPONSOR. Picture this in the album liner notes: Neel Blair uses Roland Keyboards, Yanigisawa Saxophones, and eats Krispy Kreme Doughnuts EXCLUSIVELY.
I await your reply...
