THE STORY OF DAVE BERKSON
Drums & Percussion
...To be a rock and not to roll...
Greetings ladies and gentlemen. I bring to Huxter a musical experience like no other, which includes playing every type of music imaginable, an appearance on MTV news, hearing my music played to millions of Dallas radio listeners, the Tao, and being shocked by a Mexican Witch with a tazer gun.
...It's a part of my rock and roll fantasy...
My musical experience started with piano lessons as a little kid. In the 4th grade music became available to me as a class in school, it sounded better than Math! So I had to choose and instrument...I chose drums because it was the only instrument they offered which I had seen on MTV. Much to my dismay, I only had a snare drum to beat on. From day one, I couldn't wait until I could get a whole kit.
Finally, I got a drum set when I was 14, and I started taking lessons. After talking to my drum teacher, Dave Jette, about his lifestyle, I decided I wanted to play drums for a living. I studied with Dave until I graduated from High School.
Around the same time, I met a curious fellow named Neel Blair. We both went to Washington Middle School and Roosevelt High School in Seattle, WA, and participated in the same high school jazz bands. I felt somewhat of a kinship with the guy, because we both loved to groove, make music, and wanted to play for a living.
Next, I went to University of North Texas to study music. After 2 years, I changed majors, but I also joined the band which I would spend 5 years with, Riddle Me This.
Being a member of Riddle Me This was an amazing experience. Musically, I was able to draw from my diverse musical background, playing unique world-influenced rock. I played in front of thousands of people, made live appearances on the #5 morning radio show in Dallas, saw my picture on MTV news, and played in front of thousands of people in 4 states.
...It's hard to leave when you can't find the door...
In spring 2000, I moved up here to Chicago for professional reasons, and was reunited with my high school friend Neel Blair, who moved to Chicago at the same time I did. Eventually, we both became friends with Matt Walus, who needed a drummer and keyboardist to play with, and the rest was rock and history.
These days, I still listen...IT's 1:30 AM...FUCK!
